A Night at the Museums

Girl scouts will learn how STEM relates to museums and informal education communities by exploring how conservation themes are manifested in a museum curator's job in three different organizations: The St. Petersburg Museum of History, the Museum of Fine Arts and The Pier Aquarium. This overnight program begins with an afternoon collecting session at Spa Beach where girls can catch critters and learn about the organisms in Tampa Bay and why habitat and water conservation are so important. Then, girls will follow Aquarists on a behind the scenes tour for a better understanding of how STEM knowledge keeps our fish happy and healthy! Next, the girls will visit the Museum of Fine Arts to learn how artwork is preserved and maintained for the benefit of future generations, including how to handle artwork and design an exhibit. Participants will even get to use tools of the trade from licensed fine arts professionals! The evening ends with group storytelling time at the St. Petersburg Museum of History - but the program doesn't end there! The next morning, girls will be treated to a healthy breakfast before embarking on a walking tour of St. Petersburg to explore how cultural heritage is preserved through architecture and historical buildings. Before going home, girls can make their own recycled paper journals to document their experiences and discoveries.
