Aim for the Stars Outreach

In 1998 Aim for the Stars Science and Math Outreach began as a way to motivate children to enjoy science and math so that they would continue to explore the subjects and enroll in the sciences when they reached college-age. Aim for the Stars has evolved into a comprehensive informal educational outreach involving children entering grade three through grade ten. Aim for the Stars has worked to remain aware of current research and practice in the area of informal education creating new curricula and modifying earlier ones to reflect that awareness. We remain a popular choice for informal science and math enrichment.

We continue to struggle to bring girls into our fold. One goal is to modify curricula to make them more "girl-friendly," create all-girl camps, and give grants directed to girls to attend our summer programs. We have increased the number of girls attending, and expect to continue to improve. While we have been directing our energies toward recruitment of girls, we have neglected our technology needs. Most of the young women attending Aim for the Stars, take Eco-Excitement, Go Green!, Art in Science in addition to some robotics and forensics. Participants in these camps spend time in the "field" and up until now, have had no access to the internet for research and data input applications. They have been successfully using pencil and paper, but this is the technological era and they should be encouraged to build proficiency with technology. Therefore, our greatest goal today is to encourage young women to use the technology available to them through the use of iPads and laptop computers.
