All-Girls Summer Robotics Camp

The goals of this program is to provide girls entering the 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the fall with hands-on activities guided by older female FRC team mentors and role models in a single-sex grouping to increase the girls' interest and self-confidence in STEM-subjects while increasing participation in and retention in STEM-classes through middle school and high school. Girls participating in this project will express greater interest and confidence in choosing to take STEM classes, participate in STEM extracurriculars and pursue STEM careers. This will be measured by a pre- and two post-camp surveys. 80% of the 6th and 7th grade girls in last year's non-traditional grant supported summer camp expressed interest in a follow up camp in 2012. Therefore another goal would be to offer an “intermediate robotics camp.” for experienced girls so they can deepen their interest and competencies in STEM topics.

A further goal of this camp is to influence girls who did not participate through peer communication and sharing. This was attested to by several parents of last year's camp participants:

* She also played a lot with her hydraulic ?bot and showed it to a number of her friends/soccer teammates and generated a lot of peer interest.

* It not only increased her interest, but also that of many of her friends to whom she showed & demonstrated her robots.

Multiplier effect: by offering hands-on, take home projects and a camp tee shirt, the girls will be able to share their excitement and enthusiasm with other girls thereby creating a multiplier effect of the camp. Furthermore, by using high school girls as mentors, they not only have a positive influence on the younger girls but also deepen their own commitment to STEM studies and careers
