ALT3DTECH: 3D Technology is not just for boys.
This program will collaborate with Sci-port to produce 3D printed objects that will demonstrate the entire process of creating a design from a conceptual drawing to a final product. Our equipment we will be provided include 2-3D printing machines, 1-3D printing craft pen, 1-3D scanner, and supporting computer equipment such as desktops, laptops, tablets, webcams, desktop paper printer.
Our goal is to provide our guests with a basic knowledge of our technologies that they will understand. To achieve this goal, we will collaborate with Sci-port to identify the final product/s of this project such as:
1. Guests will design a product that will be indivdually produced.
2. Guest will collaborate to make a product to be donated to Sci-Port that guests can return in the coming years, possibly being an inspiration piece.
3. We will create teams to create a product that can be judged and teams will be awarded prizes.
We will begin our program with an introduction of who we are and what we do. We will then introduce our equipment and briefly demonstrate and explain how they work and provide conceptual ideasof what they can be used for. We will begin the project by introducing the defined product that will be made and define the standards. This will begin the creative designing session that will use brainstorming and teamwork to createva rough sketch. We will then evalute these sketches and define geometric sizes and discuss why defining size and shape are important. we will proceed to draw these designs in CAD softwares, introducing basic drawing tools that will allow guests to interact with the software and will be shown how to make their designs a 3d model. These drawings will be reviewed and processed to be printed. We will have guests assist us with preparing the 3D printers by using the software to contol the machine. Once the machines are running we will introduce 3D scanning and demonstrate how it can be used. We will then discuss the conceptual and practical uses. We will then allow guests to use the 3D scanner to scan an object. We will intoduce our 3D crafting pen and demonstrate and discuss the potential applications.
After each part is completed on a 3D printer, we will clean up each model using several techniques to remove and clean these items. Some of these techniques may come with a discussion of what is occuring such as thermal and chemical changes. There will be Lab time for assembling parts together, some items may be fastened using chemical connection such as super glue, thermally; by being melted together, and mechanical by using nuts, bolts, washers or screws. Guests will also prepare and present a brief presentation of their product explaining what it is, the purpose, and demonstrating the object being used. If a team project is used then this will apply as a team and each member will participate in the presentation. Depending on the project, the products will either be given to guests or presented to Sci-port as a gift. The presentation may include other Sci-port guests, friends and family members.
