Alternitave Energy

To explore Wind, Solar, Bio-Diesel/Bio-Mass, Hydroelectric and other forms of alternative energy. We have developed courses in each of the above areas and are currently doing comparative studies to determine which is most cost effective. We did two mini camps this summer for non-traditional students and exploration in all of our programs with Welding, Electricity and Office Technology being our nontraditional programs. We have, from the beginning, worked with the Science teachers from the local high school. Last year, the math teachers ask if they could be involved in the project. We want to increase our non-traditional enrollment. The local superintendent has signed up for the STEM grants two years in a row. We are hoping to be funded next year. My school, the Russell Area Technology Center will provide one Drafting class and one Energy Class and the Russell High School, will provide the Math and Science segments. Small grants like this one will help us to offer evening workshops for parents to bring in their students to determine interest areas we provide. We are offering, for the first time this year, a Girls-only class period to provide a non-competitive/non-distraction environment to motivate and foster non-traditional career choices. In addition to offering a couple of evening community meetings that will showcase our efforts to promote math and science in our program areas, we will use this grant for supplies and field trips for this new Girls Energy Class. We have won several KY NEED Awards for our projects in the Electrical Program. We have won one National Need Award and one second place award for these projects. We received one award from the KY Environmental Cabinet and received much recognition across the state.
