AWIS El Paso Mentorship Program

The newly organized chapter here in El Paso thought that the community would benefit from a program that would support, encourage, and mentor young girls, not necessarily excluding boys, in their interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. So we created ?AWIS Mentorship Program," where students from local underserved high schools will have the opportunity to find resource and guidance from professional mentors who represent STEM. Our students are recruited freshman year and based on their interests, they will be matched with a mentor who follows their criteria. Our mentors are professors, researchers, physicians, engineers, and nurses from University of Texas El Paso (UTEP), New Mexico State University Las Cruces (NMSU), and Texas Tech University of Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. Most of our mentors are women, so they can serve as an inspiration and role model for our young ladies. We also match our mentee's with peer mentors who are undergraduate, graduate, medical, and/or nursing students, so that they can have another resource and guidance to their dream careers. We want our mentees to learn how to become confident, professional, and wise about decision making and career choice. The mentorship relationship can last a minimum of 3 months, but can continue as much as the mentor-mentee want. We also try to provide an early research experience, decided by the mentor, in which a small project of 3 weeks can be assigned and presented at one of the two research conventions held annually at the El Paso school of medicine. The mentorship relationship between our mentors and mentees is carried out by email, phone, and in person. Overall, we increase diversity in these work fields by encouraging and supporting women to strive at them with the correct tools and attitude.
