Expanding Your Horizons - Ithaca

For over two decades, Cornell has been organizing a one day conference called Expanding Your Horizons. We invite 7th-9th grade girls from all over New York state to come to campus for the day and learn about science and math. They get to participate in three workshops in various fields, have free time to explore an insect zoo and see science demos, and listen to a keynote speaker (which changes every year).

For our 2008 conference, we were able to expand the number of girls that we could accommodate from 200 to 267. We had 40 workshops in various fields, from chemistry to food science to computer science. We even had five workshops go to the Lansing Correctional Facility on a different Saturday and have 40 girls perform workshops. They girls, who are there for behavioral problems, were so thrilled since they rarely get opportunities such as this.

This year we hope to continue to organize a wonderful conference. Parents and students gave wonderful reviews. We will also take their suggestions seriously and improve the conference as much as possible. One goal this year is to recruit a more diverse population, mostly from inner city schools and very rural schools. We made an effort this year, but did not get as many girls as we had hoped from these schools. We now have a better idea of how to recruit and look forward to having a more diverse conference.
