Women in Science Conferences

The Women in Science program is designed to show girls and young women that they have the opportunity and capability to achieve success in any scientific, technological, engineering, or mathematical field they choose. Through our semi-annual conferences, we strive to demonstrate these concepts through the sharing of experiences and hands-on, laboratory type activities led by outstanding professional women in these fields. The planning committee's responsibility lies with empowering the Women in Science participants with the knowledge, resources, and abilities to encourage them to complete their education and pursue careers in the science, mathematical, and/or technological worlds.

One of the goals for these conferences is to renew the loss of interest in science, math, and technology in our young students. Results of an international science and mathematics study indicated that ?children in the United States were among the leaders in the 4th grade assessment, but by high school graduation, they were almost last.? This decline can be partly attributed to the fact that many girls and young women in junior and senior high school lose interest in science, mathematics, and technology. This loss of interest in such courses and careers has a direct impact on communities, as local economies suffer from a lack of a diverse, educated workforce. Through these conferences, girls and young women learn about the opportunities of rewarding, well-paying careers in these fields. Attendees also have opportunities to create personal connections with professional women.
