YWCA Salem Da Vinci Girls

The intended effect of the YWCA Salem Da Vinci Girl's Program is for girls in grades 3-8 to recognize and realize opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and in non-traditional careers for women.

The YWCA Da Vinci Girls Program is an after-school program emphasizing hands-on exploratory learning. Currently it is operating for girls in 3rd-8th grades. Up until this school year, the Da Vinci Girls served girls in 3rd-5th grades. Many young girls are faced with making critical decisions when they get to high school that could limit their career options and earning potential as adults. The YWCA Da Vinci Girls Program is designed to reduce the gender gap and increase exposure to and interest in STEM fields for girls ages 8-14.

Da Vinci girls' classes have a capacity limit of 25 girls per class to ensure one-on-one teacher attention. Each session lasts six weeks and the girls are involved in curriculum-based "hands-on" learning activities that are fun and exciting. Sessions are held in the fall, winter and spring. Topics such as ”Physics of Toys and “Keeper of the Earth” give girls an opportunity to conduct experiments while exploring scientific principles. The curriculum for the 2008-2009 school year is called “Scientist, Artist, Inventor,” focusing on the inventions and science of Leonardo da Vinci. The curriculum includes exploration of flight, mechanics, engineering, symmetry, the golden ratio and much more.

The YWCA Da Vinci Girls Program operates in six-week sessions, with one class per week, for one hour each class, and it is held at the school site location where the students are registered. At the end of each six-week session a “Completion Celebration” is held that provides reinforcement of the concepts the girls learn by bringing the girls, their parents and their siblings together for recognition and project sharing.
